Pope Francis’ Encyclical:
2 The Scale of the Problem Facing Us
Laudato Si looks at the totality of the environmental issues facing the world: among them are pollution and climate change (climate is a common human good);
The depletion of natural resources (the recent scale of consumption in developed countries such as Ireland cannot be sustained);
Water (access to safe, drinkable water is a basic human right, par. 30);
Loss of plant and animal species (bio-diversity); decline in the quality of human life;
The rise of inequality between nations, the burden of international indebtedness and the impact of this on the world’s poor.
It concludes that we have not yet succeeded in changing harmful consumption habits: “Many people will deny doing anything wrong because distractions constantly dull our consciousness of just how limited and finite our world really is” (par 56).  All this calls for a much more vigorous response from Catholics
